Eugene Potapov

   Biography

Eugene has been studying Eurasian raptors and owls since middle school age. When in high school he won a competition for the best essay on a biological topic across the USSR, entitled “Owls”, and was awarded a Gold Medal and a small cash price. This money was the first he ever earned. Later his quest for raptor research brought him to the Leningrad State University under the supervision of Prof. A. Malchevskiy (MSci), and later catapulted him into the Russian Arctic to do field work for his PhD project focused on Rough-legged Hawk, Snowy and Short-eared Owl, Peregrine and Gyrfalcon. These efforts were supervised initially by Prof. A. Andreev of the Russian Academy of Sciences Institute of the Biological Problems of the North, and later by Prof. Chris Perrins (Edward Grey Institute for Field Ornithology, Oxford). His DPhil summarized 10 field seasons in the Arctic, but species-wise it was truncated to only Rough-legged Hawk due to space limitations . After completing his DPhil at Oxford Eugene did his post-doc at Uppsala University, worked for the Nordic Council of Ministers, Institute of Biological Problems of the North (Russian Academy of Sciences), and the Falcon Research Institute (UK). Eugene managed field teams for the Russian Academy of Sciences, and led and managed field teams in Mongolia, Tibet, Russia and Kazakhstan. Eugene had a field project in almost every country in the Arctic. In early 1990s he co-founded an informal research group on the Steller’s Sea Eagle, which still is actively studying this species in the Magadan region of Russia. Currently Eugene is a professor at Bryn Athyn College, Pennsylvania, USA.
