Biography
Jerry Olsen has studied birds of prey for 44 years, in the United States, Canada and Australia and, with other researchers, published some 150 papers and articles and five books on raptors. He is a member of the Institute for Applied Ecology at the University of Canberra. In 2002, with Susan Trost, Michael Wink and Hedi Sauer-Gürth, he discovered and named a new species in Indonesia, the Little Sumba Hawk-owl. In 2005 he alerted researchers to the catastrophic decline in Little Eagles in the Australian Capital Territory and has worked to explain this decline in relation to increasing rabbits, the poison Pindone used to control rabbits, and increased kangaroos driving an increase in Wedge-tailed Eagles which displace Little Eagles. With co-authors, he was the first to show that wild Peregrines fledged from bare cliff ledges can later breed in tree-nests, and discovered prey species said to be extinct in the ACT, such as Long-nosed Bandicoots, Squirrel Gliders and White-browed Babblers, in ACT raptor nests. He proposed a new model explaining Reversed Sexual Dimorphism in raptors based on the costs and benefits of curved beaks and talons, and linked 'Normal' Dimorphism in the Powerful Owl to population structures of their arboreal prey. In 2012 his book Australian High Country Owls received a Whitley Award.
