Eric Atkinson

   Biography

Eric is a broad-based field ecologist who has studied and inventoried many western North American communities for rare species from Harlequin Ducks to Boreal Toads to Ferruginous Hawks. Coupling his interests in conservation biology, behavioral ecology, and applied conservation, he and his family raise Galloway cattle at the northeast edge of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. Eric is Assistant Professor teaching biology, microbiology, research, wildlife management, vertebrate natural history, and physiology classes at Northwest College. One can still find him following pseudoraptors (Northern Shrikes) through the sagebrush on a winter morning while introducing undergraduates to avian diseases like WNV, coccidia, and malaria.

   Research Interests

Conservation biology, especially in Western North America, through development of methods for indentifying biologically important areas through various focal species venues. Winter ecology and behavioral biology of Laniid shrikes and their relationships to the raptor guilds of shrubsteppe communities. Now with the advent of prairie-based wind farms, I am interested in how placement of these can be modified to minimize impact to prairie raptors, especially Golden Eagles and Ferruginous Hawks. Avian diseases (WNV, coccidia, malaria).

Species of Interest:
  • Northern Goshawk
  • Ferruginous Hawk
  • Golden Eagle
  • American Kestrel
  • Merlin
  • Northern Saw-whet Owl
  • Burrowing Owl
  • Northern Shrike
  • Loggerhead Shrike
