Distribution: Afrotropical. Endemic to MADAGASCAR. more....

Subspecies: Monotypic.

Taxonomy: Possibly forms a superspecies with A. gentilis and A. meyerianus, and/or A. melanoleucus.

Movements: Non-migratory, but juveniles disperse from breeding areas (Bildstein 2006).

Habitat and Habits: Occurs in primary rainforest and also in dry deciduous forest. Usually secretive, except during the breeding season, when it calls loudly, but occasionally seen soaring over the forest canopy. more....

Food and Feeding Behavior: Feeds on medium-sized mammals, mostly lemurs (Avahi lanigfer and Eulemur spp.), and medium-sized and large birds, hunting from a perch during a low flight (Goodman et al. 1998). It also takes poultry. more....

Breeding: Builds a large stick nest placed in a high tree fork (Rand 1936). The nest from the previous season may be used, or a new one is built within 300-500 m from the old one (René de Roland 2000). Langrand (1990) knew of nesting records in October-November. Neighboring nests in the interior of the Masoala Peninsula were 7-12 km apart (René de Roland op cit.) more....

Conservation: Considered "Near Threatened" by Thorstrom and René de Roland (2000), who suspected that it is less common than the more celebrated Madagascar Serpent-eagle in Masoala National Park. They reported that it is persecuted by local villagers for taking poultry, and Rand (1936) also recounted instances of such persecution. This is a forest dependent species which needs a large area to survive, so it is particularly vulnerable to deforestation. Categorized globally as "Near Threatened" by BirdLife International. more....
